Skills and Cooperation
« One of the major problems for autonomous vehicles is the ability to detect VRUs (Vulnerable Road Users = pedestrians, cyclists, scooters) in all visibility conditions (including night, glare from oncoming car headlights, tunnel entrances/exits, smoke, fog, etc.). Current systems mainly use visible cameras which struggle or are inoperative in these situations. Thermal infrared cameras can address these difficult situations with great efficiency. The problem of data fusion remains: how to optimize the pedestrian detection function by making the best use of each sensor (visible + infrared)? We called on Neovision, which was able to handle all phases of the project: state of the art of possible fusion modes, prototyping of the most promising architectures, building a substantial database (driving with recording of about 1M images on 2 visible cameras and 2 IR cameras), training, performance optimization, tests, and finally integration into a live demonstrator that had to operate in real time. In the end, it is a neural network that outperforms classic architectures by improving performance in all situations, a co-signed publication, and a real-time demonstrator that works! Dealing with such a complex problem can only work if the teams are competent and if they cooperate.
